Designer Alicia Estrada established Stop Staring back in 1997 with her beautiful creations of inspired vintage classics dresses. Stop Staring dresses have been printed in fashion magazines from Vogue, Seventeen, People and so much more! Alicia has also dressed many A-list celebrities: Amy Winehouse, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Kat Von D, Dita Von Teese, and Mamie Van Doren and the list goes on.
I have followed Stop Staring when I started blogging two years ago and I have been obsessed with the beautiful dresses that is made for women of all shapes and sizes. When I found out that Stop Staring was going to have a Fall/Winter runway show I made sure to attend. All of the dresses, jumpers and even couture dresses were all stunning. Here are some beautiful looks from the runway show in the city of Techachapi, California.
I had the privilege to meet Alicia and interview her, which had me very giddy.
BLP: What inspired you to become a designer?
SS: I actually started sewing for fun at the age of 15 and my mother showed me how to sew. I would never thought that my hobby with turn into a business. Many would ask me what I was wearing and I would sell it knowing that I could make some more. I enrolled into fashion school and it helped me understand the fashion industry. Now Stop Staring is in 1,000 boutiques world wide.
BLP: Of all the styles in fashion why did you choose the “1930s-1950s Vintage” look?
SS: About 17 years ago, the 1930s-1950s was not the look that many were into the 1960s Mod, mini skirts, and the shorter the better. I had the type of personality that did not go with the trends and I loved the 1930s -1950s style because it was just so beautiful. It is weird to say that I was very anti-fashion and go against the fashion trends. I did the opposite and was a punk rock girl not into fashion. I never imagine due to thinking that I was going against the fashion trends that Stop Staring would be born.
BLP: When was your first biggest runway show?
SS: It was 10 years ago, for Style Fashion Week in Los Angeles and held at The Vibian. What was so amazing that many celebrities wore Stop Staring and it was a fashion show before the fashion show. After that I started doing fashion shows every 6 months. What slow down the fashion show was when I got pregnant with my son. My first collection was inspired by every starlet from the 1940s-1950s and it opened so many doors for me.
BLP: What were some obstacles that you faced when you started Stop Staring?
SS: When I first started the company I did not have any money to start the company. I had no investor or loans. I thought money was going to be my Ikele’s heels and the first thing I did was pray about it and went to the LORD with my request. He said, “You do not need the money. Go out there and do what you can; whatever man can not do I will do the impossible.” I had a situation that companies like Windsor, Hot Topic, and Torrid wanted to purchase 100 or even 500 units of dresses. In my head I panic and told myself that I did not have money for fabric or production. I remembered Jesus telling me, “Humble myself!” The next day I called the companies and informed them that I would love to place their orders and told them my situation. All of the stores gave me deposits, so I went from $0 to $1,000’s in my bank to start the production on the dresses.
BLP: Which is your favorite bible verse?
SS: Proverbs 12:27 “A lazy man does not roast his prey, But the precious possession of a man is diligence.”
BLP: If you have to style any starlet from the 1930s-1950s who would they be?
SS: I was very fortunate to style Mamie Van Doren and I was able to do a photoshoot of her wearing my designs. I interviewed and asked her what she thought of Stop Staring and she stated that if in her time she would choose Stop Staring over many other designers due to the stretch and it fits sexy. Mamie stated that they would need to cut it, sew it tighter to fit like Stop Staring.
The other person that I meet was many years ago, we were about to start my fashion show in The Ritz-Carlton in Pasadena, CA. A Rolls Royce pulls up and you will not believe who pulls up… Jane Rusell! She came to see my fashion show.
The ones that are not with us that I wished that I could style would be Marilyn Monroe and Joan Crawford. Joan Crawford her clothing designs were made by Adrian Adolph Greenberg (Designer for MGM), whom have all inspired me and that is why I created Stop Staring.
Alicia has inspired to work hard and to never give up. Alicia is not only talented but is a GOD fearing woman. Her message of encouragement is… Proverbs 3:5-6″ Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.“
